Millenial malaise is so...millenial. Collective responsibility is the new thing. Don't read Will Self, read David Mitchell, both Cloud Atlas and Ghostwritten. Not only great stories, but the internal connections (between characters, for example) as well as the connections between the novels will fascinate.

Which should I read first? I ask because I have a bad habit of reading sets in the wrong order, so if they relate to each other, I should at least make an effort to start with the right one.

hi - i would read them in chronological order. so start with ghostwritten and then on to cloud atlas. and really enjoy finding the links between them. don't forget to look at the dedications for example.
